Norma Gerstein, Principal & Founder- Entrepreneur / Retailer / Designer / Artist
I am Mexican, and I was born in Monterrey, Mexico. Monterrey has a population of over 5 million people and is the closest major metropolis to the United States. Monterrey is a city filled with countless and fantastic opportunities for both Business and Culture. My parents opened their First furniture store in 1969. My father was a CPA and a very talented Furniture Designer; he was the influence behind the designs and manufacturing of the furniture and accessories. My mother was the interior designer. To this day, there are hundreds of homes filled with their custom furniture. When I was 10 years old, I went to a summer camp in Texas. When asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up”? I answered, “Of Course, An Interior Designer”!
I grew up with very hard-working parents who instilled in us a love for commerce and excellent customer service. We were fortunate enough to travel to Europe quite often. My 3 brothers and I would often talk about the wonderful array of different fabrics and furniture we saw, while our parents were busy working for countless hours. At that moment, I never would have believed that this would eventually be my profession. As time passed my interests grew and I began working for a fashion designer as her assistant, at age 17. During that pivotal time in my life, I developed a love for Fashion, Textiles and their coloring. This experience catapulted me to decide to go in a different direction and study Fashion and High Fashion Marketing.
Since my passion for fashion was so intense, I made the difficult choice of going to Milan, Italy to study Visual Arts. I was extremely lucky to be one of the few students to be accepted to the prestigious Domus Academy in Milan, Italy. The Domus Academy only accepts a select few students from a select few countries every year. I was one of only two students accepted from Mexico. I finished my Masters Degree in a Year and a Half. Upon completion of my Masters Degree, I returned to Monterrey, where my parents were in need of my support in their retail furniture store. I collaborated with the business, installed the first computer systems and helped them to prosper. In no time at all, I fell in love with the business.
I poured my heart and soul into renovating the store, updating the administrative processes and growing the business. The results were fantastic. The most amazing part about it all is that I was able transform the Furniture store into a Design Studio where we were able to offer many textiles, colors, and so many more service than ever in the past. I worked directly with clients, with the help of my team and was able to fulfill their dreams, and this fulfillment also filled my spirit.
I met my husband, Evan, shortly after that period in Guadalajara, Mexico, at a Furniture show where his dad Richard Gerstein was displaying his Decorative Accessory Line. Evan had Recently graduated from Florida State University, studying International Marketing and Spanish. This man struggled to speak the best Spanish he could for me and in turn he stole my heart. Even after 20 years, I see the bright, hard working, and loving man I fell in love with all those years ago. I was looking for someone different that was a generally good human being, and I am happy to say I found him. He filled my life with love and happiness. We happily went to Miami shortly after getting married, and had our first daughter Isabella. We lived in Miami, very happily for 3 years, before moving back to Monterrey, Mexico. A Multi-National corporation hired Evan and we all moved back. I happily worked for my family again buying beautiful furniture and accessories, as well as designing homes. We had a beautiful son named Nicolas in 1999. We then decided to create our own showroom business, focusing on Fine Plumbing and decorative hardware products, opening a 6,000 Sq. Ft showroom. There, my husband and I began growing our business, which we sold in 2012. We had it for 10 very happy years.
Soon enough, another wonder came into my world, our little girl Miranda. She took part in our enthusiasm towards change, and helped in the decision to relocate to Dallas, Texas. A year after arrival, we were introduced to the Development and Construction business. We became inspired and bought a very beautiful lot in Highland Park along with a great friend and partner, with the plan of building 8 Luxury Town homes for sale. I was responsible for selecting and specifying all of the interior and exterior aestheticsof the project. We completed the project in 10 months.
Now begins the next chapter in our lives. It is called Living Modern Furnishings & Design. We will be an opento the public, Retail showroom, located in the very vibrant and hip area of South Dallas called Uptown/Oak Lawn.
We will offer home Furnishings, Accessories, Lighting, Rugs and Artwork as well as a full service design studio.
From Monterrey, Miami, Milan, and now Dallas, I’m proud to say that I am very happy with our progress. Since we arrived to Dallas, we have benefited from hospitality and an abundant of prosperity from the city. Big restaurants, big stores, and big cities, all contribute to the famous saying ‘Everything is bigger in Texas’.
I truly admire this great city and the people who live in it. I’m blessed to have the quality of life as is found in the other great metropolises as is New York City, Milan, Miami, etc.
I am extremely excited to share with my husband Evan, the best that our years of experience have given us.The great city of Dallas will receive from Living Modern, marvelous Home Furnishings, Accessories, Lighting, Rugs and Artworks.
